Background:
Increasingly, the importance of embedding equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) into science is being recognised. Not only does EDI ensure an environment where every scientist and health professional feels valued and supported in their work but is essential for innovation and excellence. It has been well documented that across the UK, inequalities related to protected characteristics are apparent in PGR education, including when compared to undergraduate education. In particular, disabled, Black, Asian and minority ethnic students are underrepresented at the PGR level. Similar inequalities exist for completion.
Thus, the objective of this summer studentship is to explore the potential barriers to PGR education and the enablers for the improvement of PGR student recruitment and experience for PGR students (including those from underrepresented groups, international students etc.) within the School of Medicine Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences at QUB.
The student on this project will work on
- Design and conduct focus groups and surveys with students and relevant academic staff representatives, to explore potential barriers and enablers.
- Data will be analysed and results and recommendations for future development presented.
