The Programme

• Course Content

  This short course is designed for those who want to:

  • Learn coaching skills and techniques as part of their leadership toolkit;
  • Reflect on their own coaching skills and recognise areas for improvement;
  • Understand the impact of coaching in an organisation and in different contexts. 

  Assessment: The Coaching short course is assessed through 2 assessment tasks, a written report based on coaching practice with 1-2 coachees and a recorded presentation based on a reflective account of the coaching practice. 

  Online Learning Resources:  Each unit is supported with online learning resources, practical guides, and reflective exercises, to enable participants to build on their learning and apply it within their own context and complete the assessment.

   

   

• Outcomes

  This programme was developed with the aim of having a significant impact on the Primary Care Federations’ mission; to provide continuing professional development for GPs and Health Care professionals working in a primary care setting, preparing future leaders for the Health Care sector.  It was also expected to support the wider agenda of transforming the Health and Social Care provision within Northern Ireland and improving the provision of Primary Care outcomes for patients across Northern Ireland.

  This short course aims to equip leaders with a set of skills which will help them navigate difficult situations using recognised coaching methodologies. The course provides participants with an understanding of the benefits, types and application of coaching used by strategic leaders and introduces coaching tools, techniques, and approaches. It also gives participants the opportunity to practice and enhance their coaching skills. This will impact staff retention and development.

  Improvements in the quality and standards of patient care delivered by the Healthcare sector are required. Key to this is the development of training initiatives to meet local needs. This module provided by the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Science at QUB was developed with staff in the QUB Graduate School and is designed to provide a QUB approved qualification in coaching with a focus on primary care.   

   

   

• Delivery

  Each unit consists of 4 workshops delivered by experienced trainers via Microsoft Teams.  There is an expectation that students will complete up to 8 hours coaching practice with 1 or 2 coachees.

  Module/Delivery times:  09.30 – 15.30 pm each day

• Selection Criteria

  Applicants should have at least one of the following:   

  1. A minimum of an Honours degree, or equivalent in a biological sciences or healthcare related subject.  
  2. At least three years’ experience working in a healthcare-related role. 
  3. Current employment in a healthcare research-related role.

  Please  note that if a candidate does not have the academic qualifications stated in criterion 1, but can prove they have the relevant experience (criteria 2 or 3), their application will still be considered.  A Recognised Experience of Learning (RPEL) form will be made available to them to complete in addition to the online application. In this instance, individuals will be contacted directly.  If RPEL is required, please ensure you add all information to your application. The more information provided, the more helpful it is for the admissions process.  

  The Department for the Economy Skill Up Fund is open to applicants resident in Northern Ireland only. It is not open to applicants from outside Northern Ireland.

  To be eligible for a fully funded place under this programme you must:

  • over 18 years of age;
  • eligible to work in Northern Ireland;
  • settled in Northern Ireland, and has been ordinarily resident in the UK for at least three years;
  • or is a person who has indefinite leave to enter or remain in the UK
  • Must meet the existing entry requirements for the course. 

  Due to high demand you are advised to apply as early as possible.

  We may be able to consider self-funded or employer funded applicants on a case by case basis, as capacity on the individual PGCert programmes allow. Please indicate in your application if you wish to be considered as a self-funded or employer funded applicant.

  *EU & International applicants may be eligible, but must be aware of visa implications and follow up as necessary for this part time course.
