Equity, Diversity and Inclusion
Equity, Diversity and Inclusion within the Centre for Medical Education
In CME, we are committed to developing an environment that celebrates diversity, where all our staff and students feel included and that they belong, and where everyone can achieve their potential.
How we are developing an inclusive culture
We actively engage with our students and staff in working together to develop an inclusive culture.
Some examples of training that was co-created with our students are the Active Bystander Training that is delivered across Queen’s and the online resource eLearning for Healthcare Educators.
Together with our diverse student body we have developed student handbooks which offer advice and guidance to students from diverse backgrounds to help them to adjust to university and to clinical placement.
We offer an inclusive curriculum that celebrates diversity.
We are signatories to the BMA Racial Harassment Charter for Medical Schools and the UK Medical Schools Charter on So-Called LGBTQ+ ‘Conversion Therapy’.
What do we mean by Equity, Diversity and Inclusion?
-
Equity
Equity relates to fairness and ensuring that everyone can achieve their potential regardless of their personal or social circumstances (OECD). It recognises that we do not all start from the same place and that adjustments may be needed to promote fairness.
- Diversity
Diversity is about recognising and valuing individual differences that are visible and invisible (Equality Commission for Northern Ireland)
- Inclusion
Inclusion promotes an environment where everyone feels respected and valued, and has equal opportunities, regardless of their background or identity.
