DEIB in Education
We are committed to integrating DEIB considerations into teaching and learning. As part of our commitment to sustainability, we map our modules and programmes against the UN Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 5 Gender Equality and SDG 10 Reduced Inequalities. For example, in our postgraduate module on AI in Business and Society, students examine the nature and impact of bias within algorithmic systems. In Human Resource Management, students engage with industry experts and professional bodies to learn about current issues related to DEIB in the workplace. Together, through education, we can help to build equitable, inclusive, and sustainable organisations.
Dr Bahareh Ansari and Dr Laura Steele were awarded the Teaching and Learning Forum SOTL Seedcorn Funding for their project which will assess whether generative artificial intelligence (AI) technologies (such as ChatGPT) are beneficial or detrimental to student learning outcomes.
These technologies could provide multiple benefits to students from diverse backgrounds, such as translation and writing assistance to international students, personal tutoring, alternative learning, and organisation strategies for students with learning disabilities. On the other hand, using these technologies might further exacerbate the existing inequalities by providing more benefits to those with more robust English and technical backgrounds.
By examining a diverse group of students’ use of generative AI in a real-world assessment and their reflection on this experience, this project will explore some of the differential impacts of these technologies.
