Azhar Murtuza
Azhar graduated with an MBA, and is now a trailblazing, award-winning sustainable biotech entrepreneur.
Azhar, why did you choose to do an MBA at Queen's University?
I chose to pursue my education in Northern Ireland, specifically at Queen's University, due to strategic considerations. The geographical location of Northern Ireland, coupled with Queen's University's esteemed reputation in science and business, presented an appealing prospect for gaining exposure to international business and establishing a business globally. The Masters in Business Administration (MBA) programme at Queen's University stood out as a reputable course that offered the ideal opportunity to align my academic pursuits with my aspirations for international business success.
What direction has your career taken since graduation?
Since completing my MBA, I was endorsed by Queen's University for a start-up visa which laid a stepping stone for my biotech company, ‘Born Maverick’. We are a highly innovative start-up working in the food industry. We design and create new healthy food products delivered in a caring and sustainable way that is good for the earth and its inhabitants.
I began to gain traction in the food eco-system as I was the first person to be endorsed by Invest NI and was then further supported by Innovate UK to be recognised as one of the top 12 sustainable start-ups within the UK across all sectors. We have also now stretched our base across the Kent region to work with leading research organisations and work towards projects that would allow food to be accessible and affordable to all segments besides being sustainable, nutritious and tastier.
How did your MBA prepare you for your current job role?
My MBA equipped me to integrate management and business development skills with my existing knowledge in biotechnology, in which I studied my undergraduate degree in. Crucially, it provided me with a launchpad and networking opportunities that were invaluable for assessing the market in real time and learning from industry experts on project development strategies.
One of the key advantages of studying at Queen's University is the strong connection to the local ecosystem within Northern Ireland, allowing a seamless transition into my current job role.
What were your favourite courses, modules or educational takeaways from your time at Queen's and why were they impactful?
My favourite module during my degree was Marketing Strategy. This module allowed me to understand the business case scenarios and take a cue out of those learnings to adapt and implement in real life. It was also good to learn about the fundamental topics that would allow us to analyse our value proposition and build a viable business model.
Did you study abroad? If so, where and what did you gain from this experience?
Before attending Queen’s Business School, I completed my Undergraduate degree in India. I studied Biotech Engineering and had a great exposure in conducting fungal based projects which are being currently adapted by our company to develop mycelium for the food industry.
