Why is this short course for you?
- You want to gain the foundation knowledge necessary to trade and invest with confidence and understand financial markets. A certificate of attendance will be issued on completion of all 3 modules.
- You want taught in the Trading Room where classes are small and interactive and you have access to Bloomberg Terminals (used by major financial firms).
- You want to study trading and investment for personal purposes, career purposes, or as a taster course for further study. This course is recognised in Route B of Degree Plus.

Tuesday, 6pm - 8.30pm (2.5hrs including 15 min break) Stock Price Valuation |
This session explores the concept of fundamental analysis, looking at the main determinants of share price movements and how to analyse a firm based on its quantitative and qualitative features. Participants will learn how to determine the price of a share using discounted cash flow analysis and comparable analysis (comparing financial ratios). |
Wednesday, 6pm - 8.00pm (2 hrs including 10 min break) Trading & Technical Analysis |
This session begins by looking at how to trade on a margin through spread betting and CFDs. Options and futures are then introduced. The session then moves on to technical analysis where participants learn how to use technical indicators and overlays, chart patterns, candlestick graphs and multiple time frames to determine when to enter and exit a trade. |
Thursday, 6pm - 9pm (3hrs including 15 min break) Investing & Portfolio Management |
This session begins with a recap of equity before looking at other asset classes: bonds, currency, cash, property and commodities. Participants then learn about asset performance across the business cycle followed by the importance of asset allocation and how to construct and manage a portfolio. The session ends with a simulated stock market challenge game where the winner(s) will receive a prize. |
Important Information
- This course is aimed at those with a beginner or introductory level of knowledge in trading and investment. This course may therefore not be suitable for those who have covered the course content already through experience or education.
- To fully benefit from this short course you should have a strong grasp of the English language and numeracy skills equivalent to a grade B in GCSE Mathematics (or equivalent qualification). You should be at least 17 years old.
- Each course is capped at 20 people. Enrolment is on a first come, first served basis. A place is only secured when we have received a payment for the full amount. Payment should be made online using debit or credit card.
- *To be eligible for the student price, you must have a student card from any educational institution or you must be a member of Queen's staff. Proof will be required. If you fail to provide proof you will have to pay the difference between the student and non-student price to return on the second night.
- If you wish to apply for a refund or to swap onto a different course you must do so by 6pm on the Tuesday a week before the course starts. After this time, swapping or a refund is only possible in the unlikely event of the course being cancelled or due to exceptional personal circumstances.
