Postgraduate: Ishara's experience studying Business Analytics
Ishara Danansooriya is a MSc Business Analytics student from Sri Lanka.
Why did you choose to study MSc Business Analytics?
As an accountant with over eight years of experience across various finance domains, I have come to recognise the vital role that analytical skills play, particularly the capacity to perform advanced data analytics. In today's era, where automation is transforming many accounting functions, acquiring proficiency in advanced analytics is essential for accountants to enhance their skill set. This enables them to become versatile professionals and contribute significantly to the value proposition of organisations.
Why did you decide to undertake postgraduate study at Queen's University, instead of a different institution?
As I was considering institutions for my studies, Queen’s University Belfast stood out as my top choice, due to its membership in the Russel Group.
Several key factors influenced my decision. Firstly, the MSc Business Analytics course offered by the university had module content that emphasised practical applications over theoretical concepts. This practical orientation aligned perfectly with my educational goals.
Secondly, I received positive testimonials from students who had previously completed the programme, which further solidified my choice. Their feedback on the programme's quality and impact on their careers was highly encouraging.
Lastly, Queen's University's commitment to providing additional support in various aspects, such as accommodation, career guidance, and mentorship, was a significant factor in my decision-making process. This comprehensive support system demonstrated the university's dedication to the holistic development and success of its students.
How has this course helped towards, or shaped, your future career goals?
The results achieved through the course have been truly remarkable. As someone who had no prior experience in coding, I was able to dive into advanced data analytics using complex coding techniques within just two months of starting the programme. Today, I have become proficient in the use of essential tools like R, Python, Tableau, and SQL.
This transformation has elevated my knowledge and skills to a level where I can proudly consider myself a hybrid accountant. This unique blend of accounting and analytical proficiency has given me a distinct advantage in roles that demand a combination of these skill sets.
Have you secured a job yet? If so what is your job title and the company you are working for?
Yes. In the month of August, I received three job offers and ultimately decided to accept a position with one of the largest renewable energy companies in the UK, located in Scotland, where I will be working as a Financial Planning and Analyst. During the interview process, my analytical skills made a significant impression on the employer, enabling me to stand out from traditional accountants and ultimately secure the job.
What were the highlights of your course and your time here at Queen's University?
My key highlights include, the friends that I was able to make, who come from different parts of the world, career events organised by the university allowing me to acquire degree plus status, my future platform allowing services to improve our ability to secure a job, specially the CV review services, Career fairs giving us the opportunity to talk to employers about job opportunities, and overall university experience.
