Postgraduate: Jenoz's Study Abroad Experience in Mexico
Jenoz Blesson Amos is an MBA student at Queen's Business School, who took part in a five day study abroad scheme with IPADE university in Mexico.
Where did you study abroad and how long for?
I had the opportunity to visit Mexico and studied at IPADE Business School for five days.
Tell us about your study abroad experience.
Over the five days, we engaged in a series of company visits, insightful sessions, and cultural experiences which broadened our perspectives on social entrepreneurship, sustainability, and leadership.
Our journey began with a visit to Fundación Reintegra, a trust dedicated to rehabilitating minor convicts by instilling social responsibility and providing vocational training. We witnessed how the organisation empowers youth through skills like hairstyling, t-shirt printing, and baking; enabling them to start their own businesses and contribute positively to society.
This visit highlighted the profound impact of targeted social interventions in reducing recidivism and fostering community development.
What areas of your study abroad programme did you find most rewarding?
The area of the programme I found I most rewarding was the tour of Grupo Bimbo, as learning about their innovative practices aimed at promoting sustainable growth expanded our understanding of sustainability and leadership. Grupo Bimbo’s model of integrating sustainability into its core operations offered valuable lessons on balancing profitability with social responsibility.
Another highlight would be learning about the Mexican culture and hearing stories from around the country, such as on day four during the session "A Cop’s Story: Jorge Amador." We learned about the remarkable transformation of Ciudad Nezahualcóyotl’s police force under the leadership of Jorge Amador. His strategic reforms, ethical guidelines, and emphasis on community engagement turned a corrupt institution into a respected entity. The accompanying documentary, "A Cop Movie," further humanized the police force, showcasing their challenges and efforts. This session reinforced the significance of effective leadership and community collaboration in institutional reform.
Later that day we participated in a vibrant Mexican festival, complete with Mariachi music, traditional costumes, and local cuisine. This celebration was a delightful immersion into Mexico’s rich cultural heritage, fostering a deeper appreciation for its traditions and community spirit.
How has undertaking the study abroad programme has helped towards, or shaped, your future career?
The International Week at IPADE Business School was a transformative experience. I gained invaluable insights into innovative social enterprises and sustainable business practices. Understanding the importance of community engagement and ethical leadership in transforming institutions was particularly impactful.
Additionally, the cultural experiences deepened my appreciation for Mexico's rich heritage and the significance of cross-cultural exchanges in shaping global perspectives.
One of the most significant takeaways was the realization of how adaptable and resilient businesses and communities can be in the face of crises, as demonstrated by the "Clean the World" session.
Furthermore, the visits and sessions highlighted the critical role of sustainability and ethical practices in today’s business landscape, providing a comprehensive understanding of how businesses can drive positive social change while achieving their goals.
What advice would you give to a future student thinking of undertaking a study abroad programme?
For students considering studying abroad, I wholeheartedly recommend taking the plunge. Embrace the opportunity to learn in a new environment, as it broadens your academic and cultural horizons.
Engage actively in all sessions and cultural activities, as they offer unique insights and lasting memories. Studying abroad not only enhances your academic knowledge but also fosters personal growth and a deeper understanding of global issues.
Be open to new experiences and ready to step out of your comfort zone. The friendships and networks you build during such programs are invaluable, offering diverse perspectives and opportunities for collaboration.
Take advantage of every opportunity to interact with local communities, as these interactions enrich your understanding and appreciation of different cultures.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my experience. I hope it encourages more students to explore international study programs.
