Aaditya Joshi is a BSc Finance student who took part in a direct exchange programme to Queen’s Business School from Beloit College in USA.
Why did you choose to come to Queen’s Business School?
I decided to attend Queen's Business School because of its reputation for academic excellence and focus on research-based education. The School is well-known for it's expertise in finance, and I was particularly attracted to the wide range of modules that combine theoretical principles with practical application. Additionally, Queen's offer a unique global perspective that is important for understanding the interconnected economic environments of today.
The student community and alumni network also offer excellent opportunities for personal and professional growth. Being a part of Queen's Business School means being at the forefront of financial education, where I can acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to make a significant impact in the finance industry.
How did you find the change to studying in Northern Ireland?
Studying at Queen's University Belfast in Northern Ireland was an adventure filled with challenges and exciting opportunities. It was a considerable adjustment for me to transition from the American undergraduate system to the academic structure here. However, I soon discovered that the emphasis on independent study and deep analysis has enhanced my analytical skills and encouraged me to engage more with my subject matter.
Living in a different culture has been incredibly enriching too. The warmth and inclusivity of the local community have made it easier for me to adapt and have enhanced my educational experience. From trying new foods to learning about local customs, I found myself embracing a new way of life.
The transition has been incredibly rewarding, both academically and personally. I am grateful for the opportunity to broaden my horizons and gain a new perspective on the world. Studying in Belfast has been an unforgettable journey that has left me with a better understanding of myself and the world around me.
What areas of your study direct exchange programme did you find most rewarding?
Participating in events organised by the university and engaging with the community at Queen’s have been some of the best experiences of my time abroad. One of the highlights was attending the 'Future Ready Skills' conference, which was a three-day conference organised by Queen's University Belfast Careers Team. This conference was helpful in enhancing my understanding of the skills required in the modern workforce.
Outside the classroom, I committed to making a positive impact through the 'Handy Helpers' program coordinated by Jonny Baxter in Queen's Student Union. This initiative allowed me to participate in a variety of one-off volunteering activities, from community gardening to assisting in local events, providing me with invaluable hands-on experience and a chance to contribute to the community. This flexibility to choose activities that matched my interests and schedule made volunteering an integral part of my life here.
My weekends were often spent exploring the natural beauty of Northern Ireland, with trips organised to different forest parks near Queen's University Belfast but also my own little random walks around the city. These trips were not only a great way to relax and recharge but also a great opportunity to see all around Northern Ireland.
I've been lucky to have some amazing professors during my time at Queen's University Belfast. Jiadong Liu, Dun Han, Yassine Bakkar, and John Turner have all been influential in my education. Their knowledge and guidance have impacted how I approach learning and think about finance and business, making my time at Queen's Business School truly outstanding.
I also had a part-time job at Subway, which was a great opportunity to put my skills in customer service and teamwork to use. Balancing work with my studies and volunteering commitments really improved my time management skills. Working at Subway also gave me a great community of friends, which made my time in Northern Ireland even more special.
