Emilia Suchora is a BSc Business Management student who is currently working as a Marketing Assistant for the School in her placement year.
Tell us why you decided to go down the marketing route.
From a young age, I loved anything that allowed me to be creative. When I began searching for a placement, I knew I would go down a creative route.
During my time in school, I studied four A Levels - one of which was English literature. Due to my passion for creativity and design along with my desire to develops my skills in writing, I believed Marketing would be a fantastic role to take on.
Finally, after three interviews, I landed the role as a Marketing Assistant for the School and couldn’t be happier.
Tell us about your placement experience.
During my first three months at the School, I received extensive training in essential digital marketing skills such as content creation, design, and analytics. I completed several courses on social media marketing platforms such as HubSpot and Hootsuite.
One of the most important skills I learned was how to analyse social media statistics using analytics tools on the platforms. I then utilised Excel to produce monthly reports on the effectiveness of our campaigns.. Learning these difficult skills, like examining social media trends, has given me analytical skills I know I can use in any role I take on in the future.
Of course, there were challenges along the way. One area I struggled with was writing blogs and captions for social media. However, my mentor worked with me to help me overcome this challenge by reviewing my past work and guiding me on how to improve my writing during our 1:1s. Very swiftly, I learned how to produce engaging, well-written pieces that captured readers' attention, which was a significant breakthrough for me.
Further along my placement year at the School, I was able to apply the skills I had learned in the first three months and expand on them. I created video content for the school's social media platforms, which was a new experience for me. After noticing how successful video content was in our monthly reports, I decided to make more reels to improve our following and engagement.
What is your favourite part about your role?
One of the most exciting parts of my placement has been attending events as a representative of the School, including the VAVA Awards back in September 2022.
I was responsible for shooting content and creating Instagram stories for the School's accounts, using my creative skills to produce attractive, on-brand content on the spot, as the School had sponsored an award.
I also had the opportunity to connect with successful individuals and learn from them about social media and content creation. Attending events like this has helped me develop my communication and interpersonal skills, which I know will benefit me in my future career.
How do you feel about your placement experience so far?
Overall, my placement has been an incredible learning experience, and I know that the skills I've gained will help me achieve my career goals. Through the guidance of my mentor and the many opportunities the School has offered me, I have discovered a true passion for marketing.
I believe finding a career you are passionate about is very important. So far, my placement has motivated me to excel in both my personal and work life which is something I hope everyone gets to experience during their placement year.
