Undergraduate: Zachariah’s Reflections On His BSc In Finance
Zachariah AI-Qaryooti is a member of the Student Managed Fund and a BSc Finance student at QMS, graduating in summer 2023. Here’s his final year, final thoughts.
What has been your favourite part of studying at QMS?
The Queen’s Student Managed Fund (QSMF) has been the highlight of my QMS experience, as the events QSMF held with industry professionals inspired me to seek roles that I did not think would be attainable before I started at Queen's.
Tell us about your experience taking part in the DegreePlus / Future-Ready Award.
I have taken part every year in the Queen’s Student Managed Fund as Analyst, Sector Head and this year, Chief Investment Officer. These experiences provided excellent financial markets experience and helped me land my placement at Morgan Stanley and led me to decide to pursue a role in Equity Research.
Tell us about your placement experience.
My placement year was at Morgan Stanley where I worked in Prime Brokerage within the Sales and Trading division. My role was varied, involving a lot of data analysis to identify trends in our clients' behaviour based on how they used our technology offerings.
I also owned an international project to implement a new tool, which allowed me to lead calls with senior client executives. I demonstrated organisational skills while co-leading a global project with senior sponsorship to launch a new business, as I was in charge of cross-division dependency coordination.
What advice would you give to anyone thinking about studying at the School?
Ensure you grasp as many of the vast opportunities available to you and continually aim to push yourself just past your perceived comfort zone. This is the best way to develop throughout your life at university and beyond.
