Research Support and Facilities
You will be assigned a principal supervisor and a second supervisor, appointed in a supporting role. A third supervisor may, exceptionally, be appointed where a student’s research is interdisciplinary, to provide a link between the disciplines.
We offer office space and a computer as well as supporting the travel costs of students presenting at conferences. Many of our research students contribute to our undergraduate degree teaching as University Tutors. Our doctoral students play a full and active role in relation to the wide range of research activities in the School.
The School offers the following facilities for all full-time research students for the 3 years of study towards their PhD.
- Shared office space and access to a desk
- Personal computer with internet access
- Reasonable use of a shared printer*
- Reasonable use of telephone* where available for research purposes
- Access to free inter-library loans. Please Note that Annual Quotas apply
- Access to social space for relaxation and social mixing
- Opportunities to develop transferable skills, such as teaching, IT skills, career development courses
Conferences & Publications
We recommend that our research students get involved in organising and attending the student-led annual Doctoral Conference led jointly with University College Dublin. PhD students are expected to submit at least one paper to refereed conferences and/or journals during the course of their research.
Research Seminars
You are expected to become involved in the research culture of the School and our Research Centres frequently hold seminars and events that will be of relevance to you as you progress through the programme. The School's newsfeed is regularly updated with information about events and you are encouraged to consult this regularly.
