Postgraduate Workshop

Aim and Objectives

PhD students in any year of their study are invited to submit and present their research ideas at the workshop. To participate, a title and 5 keywords must be emailed to control2016@qub.ac.uk by Wednesday, August 10, 2016 with the subject PG Workshop.

Each participant is required to deliver a 4-minute elevator pitch to other participants and a panel of experts. The best pitch will receive a prize.

All PhD students attending the conference are eligible to participate. This is an excellent networking opportunity for students to share and develop their research ideas. As part of the workshop, a technical tour has also been facilitated for all participants on a first-come first-serve basis.

Professor George W Irwin's Biography

George Irwin obtained a BSc (1st hons.) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in 1969 and a PhD in Control Mathematics in 1976, both from Queen’s University Belfast. Following 5 years at Loughborough University, he returned to his alma mater in 1980, where was awarded a personal Chair in Control Engineering in 1988. He subsequently received a DSc degree from Queens in 1998.

Prof Irwin established and led the Intelligent Systems and Control research group at Queens until he retired in 2013. He has published some 350 peer-reviewed journal and conference papers and guided 45 PhD students to completion. He is a past Editor-in-Chief of the IFAC journal Control Engineering Practice and currently serves on the IFAC Publications Management Board.

He is a Fellow of the UK Royal Academy of Engineering, a Member of the Royal Irish Academy and holds IEEE and IFAC Fellowships.

Dr Marek Kubik's Biography
Energy Storage Market Analyst, AES Energy Storage

Marek is responsible for the development and coordination of Advancion Energy Storage sales and project proposals across Europe, Middle East and Africa.  He has over seven years’ experience in Cleantech and the energy sector including strategy and business development.  Marek had an instrumental role in the development of the multi-award winning Kilroot Advancion Energy Storage array – the UK’s largest and first fully commercial storage facility.  Prior to this, Marek held various academic, consultancy and policy advisory roles in a number of countries.  He holds a Masters in Engineering from Durham University and an Engineering Doctorate from the University of Reading.  Marek was recognised as the Energy Institute’s Young Energy Professional of the Year in 2015.
