Useful Resources
During the academic year 2021/22 the QGI team – supported by the REC Network and iRise – held a number of consultation sessions, that were open to both staff and students, to facilitate discussions on the language that we use at Queen’s when discussing race and ethnicity. The conversations that took place were rich and varied, with staff and students agreeing that it is difficult to come to a consensus on what could be considered ‘correct’ terminology due to the very personal and individual nature of the topic. The group did however agree that some terms are widely accepted as inappropriate and should be avoided. Whilst the outputs from the consultation are not intended to act as guidance or instruction on what we should and should not say when discussing race and ethnicity at Queen’s, we have published this document as a source of information that staff and students may wish to review.
