UK China Universities Consortium on Engineering Education and Research

BACKGROUND

During the September 2016 delegation to Shanghai by Jo Johnson MP, Minister for Universities and Science, the British Council China, Southeast University on behalf of 9 China partner universities and Universities UK International signed a Statement of Intent with the objective to develop a platform that promotes strategic engagement and collaboration in higher education between a UK-China university consortium in the area of Engineering.

Following a public call by the British Council,  the UK-China University Consortium on Engineering Education and Research (UKCEER) was subsequently established. Queen’s University Belfast led the initiative with six other UK Russell Group universities, in partnership with China’s Excellence League (E9) universities under the approval of the Ministry of Education. This initiative was established with an initial funding of £200,000  by the Department of Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy for the UK partners.  

The project aims to promote and facilitate strategic engagement and bilateral cooperation in transnational joint programmes on postgraduate higher education and engineering research between the UK Partners and the China Partners, initially, but not limited to, the areas of energy and intelligent manufacturing in support of both countries’ manufacturing ambitions

World-class partners

The consortium features 9 top UK institutions and 9 elite China universities.

From the UK:

Queen’s University Belfast (Lead UK partner), University of Birmingham, Cardiff University, University College London, The University of Nottingham and The University of Warwick.

From September 2018 the University of Cambridge, University of Liverpool and University of Leeds have joined the UK partners.

From China:

Southeast University, Beijing Institute of Technology, Chongqing University, Dalian University of Technology, Harbin Institute of Technology, Northwestern Polytechnical University, South China University of Technology, Tianjin University and Tongji University

• joint research activities, with a focus on novel and pioneering approaches to energy and innovative technologies for intelligent manufacturing
• research dissemination through thematic workshops and conferences
• staff and research student exchange, joint publications and joint funding applications
• the training of future engineering leaders through transnational education programmes
• the establishment of a UK-China knowledge exploitation consortium to support industrial partners in the UK and China
