Iolra Morra More - Staff Network for Linguistic Diversity and Minority Languages

About Us

Iolra Morra More is a peer network open to all staff (permanent, contract and sessional) who are interested in celebrating and promoting minority languages and linguistic diversity on campus.

As such, this new staff network represents an important move towards promoting greater understanding and respect for languages on campus and acknowledging language rights as defined and elaborated upon by numerous United Nations, UNESCO, and Council of Europe reports.

Policies and Information

Our network aims to further advance equality at Queen’s, playing its part in meeting the ambition of our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Policy, while also working to bring our practices into line with the vision and ongoing process of implementing the Identity and Language (Northern Ireland) Act 2022.

The network also aims to:

  • Promote respect for all languages and minority languages, including, but not limited to, Irish and Ulster Scots, through academic and cultural events for staff and students.
  • Liaise with staff, students, Student Union Sabbatical Officers, student groups and others to promote the importance of linguistic diversity through outreach events, education, campus and off-site activities.
  • Develop relationships with community groups whose activities focus on promoting/developing awareness of all languages and minority languages.
  • Serve as a platform for staff to seek support, raise awareness, and share findings relating to languages and minoritised language practices.
  • Makes itself available for advice to colleagues on language provision in undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and the inclusion of minority languages in the curriculum, in particular through joint degrees.
  • Design a plan to support staff in developing their language skills through regular classes, immersion opportunities, and awareness sessions.
  • Work alongside, support and advise management and staff on minority language issues.
  • Provide advice on minority languages that will help improve decision-making at all levels within the institution and demonstrate a commitment to promoting equal opportunities and good relations.
  • Liaise with other HE institutions to develop knowledge on best practice in supporting minority languages.
