Meet the Team

Our specialised team of nurses and physicians provides independent advice to the University, staff members and students concerning the impact of health on work and study.

  • Medical Team

    Occupational Physicians provide impartial, specialist advice on fitness for work or study to the University, staff members, and students, advising on the effects of health on work or study, and the effects of work or study on health. The medical team, in particular, undertakes case management of cases considered ethically and legally more complex, health retirements and injury allowance applications, and provides medical advice and support to the multidisciplinary team. The medical team have expertise in wider areas such as Occupational Health ethics, Occupational Health law, medico-legal dilemmas, employment law and anti-discrimination legislation, as well as an understanding of environmental medicine and knowledge of health and safety legislation and duty of care.

    In relation to medical leadership, clinical governance and quality improvement are a high priority for the medical team, ensuring we benchmark with other NHS occupational health services and maintain accreditation through ISO 9001 and SEQOHS, to ensure we deliver the highest quality occupational health and wellbeing service to Queen's University.

    We provide occupational medicine expertise in a range of areas including:

    • Exposure to physical factors such as noise, vibration, biological agents, and respiratory sensitisers (asthmagens);
    • The interplay of Health, Conduct, Behavioural and Performance issues, particularly of new-onset issues;
    • Providing advice on areas such as work-related stress, burnout, mental health issues and neurodiversity;
    • Providing advice to Queen's University on chronic medical conditions, disability and reasonable adjustments;
    • Working collaboratively with the university on policy and strategy on health matters, management of attendance, and case management;
    • Engaging with staff-side representatives to ensure our service delivery remains impartial and ensures joint duty of care.

  • Nursing Team

    Specialist Community Public Health Nurses in Occupational Health (SCPHN/OH) focus on safeguarding public health in the workplace.

    The SCPHN/OH role is varied and can include:

    • identifying and preventing work-related health problems;
    • promotion of healthy living and working conditions;
    • understanding the effects of work on health, and health at work;
    • providing health screening services;
    • workplace visits to inform health assessments;
    • health promotion;
    • education and training;
    • signposting to appropriate counselling or support services;
    • providing support in terms of referrals, with risk assessment and risk management.
