In the latest of our career exploration interviews, we are delighted to be joined by Professor Su Taylor, Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure Group at Queen's University Belfast. Su will discuss her career journey from Research Assistant and studying for her PhD, to becoming a Research Engineer and the first female Professor in Civil Engineering since the formation of Queen’s University in 1845. You will be able to avail of the opportunity to ask Su questions and get some valuable advice during a Q&A session.

PROFESSOR SU TAYLOR
Professor of Structural Engineering and Head of the Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure Group at Queen's University Belfast
Su Taylor is a Professor of Structural Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast and lead of international research in Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) and low carbon solutions. She is Head of the Intelligent and Sustainable Infrastructure Group and was the first female Professor in Civil Engineering since the formation of Queen’s University in1845. Prior to this, from 2016 to 2020, Su was the Dean of Research for the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at QUB. She successfully led the research agenda for a large and diverse faculty where she embedded sustainability at its core.
Su became a Chartered Engineer in 1995, became a Fellow of Institution of Structural Engineers in 2024 and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Ireland in 2019. In 2016, in acknowledgement, Su was elected as Vice-President of the International Society for Civil Structural Health Monitoring (formerly known as ISHMII) and re-elected for a second term in 2019. She is also an elected member of the Executive Committee of the International Institute for Fibre Reinforced Polymers in Construction (IIFC).
In her own research, Su has led UKRI, European, USA-Ireland and Industry partnered projects using Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) towards intelligent civil engineering infrastructure. Whilst having had career breaks and working part-time when her three children were young, she has published over 250 papers in top peer reviewed international journals and conference proceedings. Su has delivered several keynote and plenary papers at top international conferences in the field of structural engineering. Her early research in sensors was commercialised under several patents and she is founder member and current technical Director of Sengenia Ltd.
