What is Year 5 GP?

September 2025 will see the completion of the implementation of the new curriculum (C25) with a total of 25% of all placements happening in General Practice. In Year 5 students will be spending seven weeks in one practice thereby becoming part of the team and community and practicing more and more independently while dealing with increased complexity. The students have sat their written MLA exam and will be keen to be fully involved in direct patient assessment and care to develop their clinical reasoning, ability to deliver holistic medical care and work as a contributing member of the team. This will help them to get valuable exposure for their practical exam which takes place at the end of year 5. This attachment builds on their experience gained in year 3 and 4 in GP. Unlike year 4 time with other members of the practice team is not required and the focus is on getting students direct patient contact by whatever means are available. GP and student feedback have been particularly positive when two students are placed in the same practice together. This allows for peer learning and support.

Students will record their progress on their portfolio (MyProgress) which also signposts them, with further QUB support, to look at broader aspects of delivering medical care like health inequalities, overdiagnosis, unexplained medical symptoms, chronic pain and others. Aspects like the discharge audit and the patient journey, previously part of the one week in GP during assistantship, are now incorporated into the 7 weeks in practice.

The practice and tutor will fill in two feedback forms (mid-placement and at the end of the placement) and observe and give feedback using two Mincexs. Attendance will be monitored using MyProgress as it is in Year 4 (Tutor/practice do not have to take any action only if the student sends a notification of attendance but didn’t attend).
