Matthew Wilson, Research and Enterprise Directorate
Matthew is the Head of IP and Commercialisation in the Research and Enterprise Directorate, whose leadership and resilience has shone through as he has navigated team changes, staffing shortages, and above all, a debilitating stroke which he suffered in February 2023. Returning to work and having to adapt to a physical disability, Matthew maintained a positive and motivating atmosphere, fostering a sense of unity amongst his team and demonstrating great ambition in the face of adversity.
Dr Ving Fai Chan, School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences
Ving is a Lecturer in the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences, and has provided eyecare solutions to over 270 craftswomen in Zanzibar through his transformative research. His commitment to promoting social justice and alleviating poverty has not only improved eyesight but has empowered so many women to lead more fulfilling lives; earning him recognition from the Government of Zanzibar and the European Academy of Optometry and Optics.
Clearing Project Team, Digital and Information Services and Global Marketing, Recruitment and Admissions
This cross-Directorate team successfully launched an online service for Clearing and Admissions Support enquiries - streamlining tasks, enhancing the user experience, and providing real-time analysis of data and enquiries. The new system not only modernised the Clearing process but also set the stage for a more efficient and user-friendly application experience at Queen's.
Student Wellbeing Team, Education and Student Services Directorate
The Student Wellbeing team navigated significant changes this year, including a relocation to One Elmwood. Throughout the academic year the team supported over 2,300 students, handled over 13,000 student interactions and provided crucial support to over 130 students at immediate risk. Prioritising collaboration, the team go above and beyond, placing student voice and experience at the heart of everything they do.
Allister Lee, School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science
Allister is the School Manager in the School of Electronics, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, who stands as a driving force in shaping policies and fostering a positive culture within the School. Pioneering initiatives focused on staff satisfaction and wellbeing, Allister’s visionary leadership exemplifies excellence in people management and is perfectly aligned to the University’s Staff Charter and core values.
Queen's Accommodation Residential Life Team, Student and Campus Life
Queen’s Accommodation's Residential Life team have led initiatives such as a community garden, a community fridge and pantry, weekly events promoting various aspects of sustainability, and donation stations encouraging students to donate reusable items. In their commitment to live more sustainably, the team actively participate in the switch-off campaign, promote energy-saving routines, and support wildlife preservation, aiming to become a hedge-hog friendly campus.

Professor Michael Alcorn
Michael's 35-year journey at Queen's is marked by remarkable achievements. From devising and developing the Music Technology pathway at Queen’s, to leading the successful bid to develop the Sonic Arts Research Centre, Michael's impact resonates across disciplines. His dedication extends beyond academia, as evidenced by his instrumental role in fostering sustainability initiatives and championing Queen's as a climate change action leader.
Professor Pascal McKeown
Pascal's service spans over two decades, with continued dedication to the School of Medicine, Dentistry and Biomedical Sciences; the Faculty, and the wider health care community. Pascal has been described as an outstanding ambassador for the University. With a selfless and compassionate approach to leadership, his impact on academic life at Queen’s has been exemplary and has enhanced the University’s reputation on a global scale.
