The winners of the 2023-24 Staff Excellence Awards were announced during a special ceremony on Friday 28 March 2025, held in Mandela Hall. Congratulations to all the winners and to everyone who was nominated.

DELIVERING EXCELLENCE

Laura Farling, Faculty Office AHSS

Laura is an Educational Developer in the Faculty of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences and has played a key role in fostering student-staff partnerships across the faculty. Laura led the development of the Student Digital Champions, guiding their transition into the Student Skills Assistants team this year. Through the Staff-Student Partnership Network, Laura has expanded collaboration opportunities and shown a strong commitment to innovative student support. Her work has strengthened faculty connections, empowering students to actively engage in their academic community.

MAKING AN IMPACT

Emma Healey, School of Biological Sciences

Emma is a Senior Technician in the School of Biological Sciences and has made a huge impact through her commitment to community engagement, education, and sustainability. Emma provides essential support to staff and students at the marine lab, offering valuable insights into local conservation and research efforts around Strangford Lough. Emma excels in public outreach and has organised impactful events such as open days, beach cleans, and workshops while continuing to inspire careers in environmental sciences.

CELEBRATING INNOVATION

Reimagining the Post Graduate Applicant System, Digital and Information Services and the Directorate of Academic Services

The Reimagining the Post Graduate Applicant System team has transformed postgraduate admissions at Queen’s with an innovative, integrated system built on Microsoft Dynamics 365. This solution has helped to improve both operational efficiency and the applicant experience. Through their collaborative approach, commitment to improvement, and dedication to providing a seamless experience for all users, the team has set a new standard for postgraduate admissions at the University.

BEST COLLABORATION

DfE Skill Up Project Team, Student and Campus Experience, School of AEL, Queen's Business School, Finance, Faculty Office EPS, School of EEECS, Directorate of Academic Services

The DfE Skill Up Project team launched the Skill Up programme in response to furlough during COVID, offering Level 7 upskilling and reskilling opportunities. The team secured funding from the Department for Education to support individuals enhancing their skills and expanded the initiative to other institutions. Following a successful pilot year, they received funding for three additional years. Through the team’s collaborative efforts, they have developed 27 Level 7 and short courses in key sectors, positively impacting Northern Ireland's workforce and economic growth by providing crucial skills in health, technology, and green manufacturing.

OUTSTANDING LEADERSHIP

Helen McNeely, Student and Campus Experience

As Head of Student Affairs, Helen has led impactful student initiatives to enhance the student experience at Queen’s, including the Student Wellbeing Risk Review, the rebranding of Disability Services to Accessible Learning Support, the launch of the Assessment Support Hub, and the Getting Started at Queen’s Online Platform. Helen’s knowledge, experience, and leadership have transformed the student experience, resulting in positive shifts in the university’s culture and a strengthened sense of community among students and staff.

STUDENT CHOICE

Michaeline Donnelly, Student and Campus Experience

Student Support Officer, Michaeline is the driving force behind Queen’s 'Global Minds' campaign. Michaeline goes above and beyond in everything she does, particularly helping students' that engage with the disability and well-being services. Organising impactful events focused on mental health and well-being, Michaeline ensures Queen’s students feel valued, supported, and empowered to excel in both their academic and personal lives.

EXCEPTIONAL CONTRIBUTION

Jacinta McAtamney, Student and Campus Experience

Jacinta has been a key member of Queen’s Accommodation for over 21 years, progressing from housekeeper to Facilities Supervisor, leading a team of 35 to deliver exceptional service. Managing over 2,200 student bedrooms and 90 staff apartments, Jacinta ensures high standards all-year round which was recognised through Queen’s earning the prestigious Gold Standard Accreditation from Investor in Students. Jacinta’s leadership, professionalism, and dedication to enhancing the student experience and promoting well-being make her an invaluable asset to Queen's Accommodation.
