Content Type Guidance

Introduction

We want to provide as much content type guidance and support as possible to our Web CMS Users.  With that in mind, we have created a new format for our content type information.  Each content type will now contain sections on General Guidance, Accessibility Guidance and Form Field Guidance to help users better understand how to use them.  Where relevant, we have also provided links to useful tools and resources that we think will help CMS Users to comply with this guidance.

In addition to the overhaul of the content type guidance, we also want our Web CMS Users to better understand what content types for Page Layout that is applied to their website.  So, we have created the Content Type Guidance Resource below which is a search and filtering facility that can be used to find and understand how to use content types.  In order to use this resource effectively, website owners/editors will need to know which Page Layout is applied to their website.

How do Page Layouts and Content Types relate?

  • Page Layouts are assets that we apply to a website to ensure a consistent structure and style across desktop and mobile devices.  They contain centrally agreed and defined resources.
  • Content Types are structured templates that are used to create content blocks between the header and footer of Page Layouts.  These are essentially the defined building blocks for the content of your website.

Content Type Guidance Resource

This resource can be used by CMS Users to understand the availability and usage of content types for respective page layouts.  The content types can be filtered by the page layout dropdown.  The open text search can also be used to refine results or to find a specific content type.

Please Note:  This resource does not yet contain guidance for every content type.  The WST will endeavour to add guidance for as many content types as possible in the next few weeks.
