My Experience of Working at Wimbledon 2024

Medical student Radhika shares her experience of working a summer job at Wimbledon!

Wimbledon is one of the most prestigious sporting tournaments in the world, with thousands of fans flying into London to see world-class tennis. I had the privilege of working at Wimbledon this summer and had an incredible time!

How did I get a job at Wimbledon?

The application process was relatively straightforward. I submitted a personal statement alongside additional information and then received an invitation to attend an in-person interview at the All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC).

I worked as a fleet controller at Wimbledon. This consisted of assigning cars to players and VIP guests and tracking their journeys using IT and a radio.

As a huge tennis fan, this was the perfect summer job and I really enjoyed my time in London. I chose to view the month I spent in the city as a working holiday. To ensure I wasn’t spending too much money in London, I used the bus to commute to work and tried to avoid using apps like Uber or Ola. Additionally, I chose to stay in an Airbnb outside of Central London (zones 1/2), where accommodation tends to be pricier.

Perks of working at Wimbledon

Working at Wimbledon definitely has its advantages! All Wimbledon employees are given an accreditation pass which provides access to the grounds without having to queue for entry. I was shifted for evening hours, which allowed me to spend my mornings exploring Central London and to watch tennis! Wimbledon also provides employees with a daily allowance for meals and staff discount at the Wimbledon Shop. There is also a free shuttle bus from Wimbledon station to the grounds for staff. These job perks helped me save a lot of money.

What I loved most about working at Wimbledon

Simply put, the experience. I have grown up watching Wimbledon and have always dreamt of sitting on the famous ‘Hill’ with strawberries and cream. The atmosphere at the AELTC is brilliant and to work in an environment alongside other tennis fans was incredible. I was able to step out of my comfort zone and socialise with people from all over the UK and Europe and was able to watch professional athletes ‘battle it out’ on court. One of my favourite moments was watching the sunset over the grounds whilst hearing crowds of enthusiastic fans cheering on their favourite players on Centre Court.

What I learned from my time in London

Spending one month by myself in a new city was both exciting and slightly daunting. From this experience, I learnt to appreciate my own company. I took myself on solo dates to museums, dined in restaurants and explored London by taking the tube to various stations. I struck up conversations with strangers and listened to their stories. I sat in parks alone and read. Doing these activities by myself allowed me to enjoy my time and form core memories. Wimbledon working hours can be intense, so I made sure to use my days off to rest and socialise with friends.

Compared to my life in Belfast, London felt faster, and I thoroughly enjoyed my time working at Wimbledon. To be part of such a prestigious sporting event is an opportunity of a lifetime and I am incredibly grateful for the experience. I’m glad I took the plunge in December 2023 and applied for the job. The fear of rejection is always present when trying new things, but I’ve realised that I’d rather try and be rejected, than not try at all and regret staying in my comfort zone.

Final words…

This is your sign to try something new and put yourself out there! Create new memories, meet new people and learn a new skill! The skills I’ve acquired and finessed through working at Wimbledon will help me in the future and the confidence is here to stay!
