Summer is almost over and many of us have already finished or are about to finish our leases in our university accommodations. During the last year, I lived in my student accommodation in the city centre, and it was a very nice experience; however, I must admit that moving out, especially when you are working on your dissertation, is not the easiest thing. That is why today I want to share with you some recommendations that can help you lighten your moving out so that it is not a chaotic experience.

Be sure of where you are going to move to

I think this is the most basic and most important thing. Before your lease ends, it is important that you already have a clear idea of ​​where you are going to move to. You may be returning home, or moving to another city, or you may decide to stay in Belfast for a longer period of time. If you are going to stay in Belfast for another period, make sure beforehand what type of lease you are going to get in the new accommodation you are going to, and try to look for it well in advance because it is very likely that many people are in the same situation as you looking for places to stay in Belfast.

Don't wait until the last minute to pack your bags

Plan your move at least a few weeks in advance. Break tasks into smaller steps so you're not overwhelmed. Before you start packing, decide what you want to keep, donate, sell or throw away. Moving is a great opportunity to downsize your belongings. Chances are, your place will have a donation station, so use these to help others who may need the things you no longer use.

You can also check out local charities; or if you'd rather sell your belongings, online marketplaces like Facebook Marketplace can help you get rid of items you no longer need.

Once you've decided what you want to keep and what you want to sell or give away, get ready to pack. Get boxes, tape, bubble wrap, and markers. You can often find free boxes at local stores or recycling centres; if not, your accommodation may be able to provide information about companies that sell boxes, or even help you store them if you need them for a while.

It's also important when using boxes to label them with what's inside. Have your bags packed well in advance and leave out only what you'll need for the last few days at your accommodation.

For the new place you are arriving at, I would recommend making a separate suitcase in which you pack something for the 'first night', including essentials such as toiletries, a change of clothes and important documents so that you don't have to search through boxes when you arrive.

Prepare for your checkout inspection

Your accommodation will inspect the condition of your room and kitchen before you leave. This inspection must be booked in advance, you cannot leave without doing it. Clean your room in advance and make sure everything is tidy, most student accommodations have specific cleaning requirements. Make sure you clean thoroughly to avoid extra charges.

Also, report any damage to your room to avoid being charged for it later. Fix minor problems if you can. At the same time, check what your accommodation's check-out procedures are and make sure you leave your keys so you don't get charged.

Transport

You'll likely be travelling with a lot of luggage, and you'll need a car to get around. Book a shuttle service if you have a lot of stuff to move, consider renting a van or hiring a moving service. Book ahead of time, especially during peak times like the end of the semester. Also, if you have friends or family nearby, ask if they can help you move.
