If you're already using LinkedIn in your home country, you're ahead of the curve. If not, let me guide you through setting up a profile that showcases your strengths to potential employers.

Welcome to LinkedIn sign on window

While I may not currently work as a career coach, I'm eager to share some valuable LinkedIn tips for advancing your career. Every country has its own job portals such as Naukri for India and Stepstone for Germany etc. However, as an international student, LinkedIn stands out as the go-to professional network used by startups, Fortune 500 companies, and unicorns alike.

Crafting an impressive LinkedIn profile and utilising it actively is crucial both during your student years and throughout your professional journey.

Why LinkedIn Matters

Personal Branding

LinkedIn is more than just a social media platform; it's where you cultivate your professional brand. Unlike a resume or casual social network, LinkedIn allows you to highlight your skills, expertise, and professional engagements.

Networking and Professional Connections

With millions of professionals on LinkedIn, it serves as a vast directory. You can leverage it to connect with industry peers, seek mentorship, or gain insights into specific roles and companies.

Looking Ahead

Employers and recruiters frequently use LinkedIn to scout for talent. Your profile acts as a digital billboard where you can demonstrate your value proposition and attract potential opportunities.

I have used my profile as a good example here: https://www.linkedin.com/in/madhuryaj/

LinkedIn Basic Setup - Top 5 Essentials

1. Profile photo

  • First Impression: Your profile photo is the initial introduction you make on LinkedIn. It's your chance to create a positive impact, so ensure it's professional and attention-grabbing.
  • Professionalism: Opt for a high-quality headshot that exudes professionalism. Use AI tools to refine your photo if necessary, ensuring it reflects your best self. E.g. Remini.
  • Visibility: Choose a clean white background to make your face stand out. This enhances visibility and ensures that recruiters and connections focus on you, making it easier for them to recognise and engage with your profile. A clear and prominent photo increases the likelihood of making a memorable impression in the competitive world of professional networking.

2. Headline & About Section

  • Headline Impact: Utilise the 120-character headline wisely to encapsulate your professional identity succinctly. This brief introduction serves as your digital elevator pitch, capturing attention and conveying your key attributes.

  • About Section Depth: Take advantage of the 2000-word limit in the About section to delve deeper into your story. Craft a compelling summary that highlights your unique qualities, experiences, and aspirations. This section provides an opportunity to personalise your profile and create a lasting impression on visitors.
  • Showcase Uniqueness: Use the About section to showcase what sets you apart from others in your field. Highlight your passions, expertise, and career goals to give visitors a comprehensive understanding of who you are professionally. This personalised touch can help you stand out and attract relevant opportunities.

3. Education

Highlight your educational background to provide context to your journey. Show off those smarts! Your education section is like your academic trophy case. Don't be shy - let those degrees shine!

  • If undergraduate - Mention your current undergrad degree, university details, duration, modules.
  • If postgraduate - Mention your current postgrad and previous undergrad degree, university details, duration, modules.

4. Experience

  • Comprehensive Storytelling: Use the Experience section to narrate your professional journey holistically, avoiding mere duplication of your resume. Provide depth and context to your career path, showcasing your growth and development over time.
  • Multimedia Enhancement: Enrich your profile by incorporating multimedia elements like images and links. These visual aids offer a dynamic portrayal of your work experience, going beyond the limitations of a traditional text-based resume.
  • Internship Significance: Whether paid or unpaid, emphasise the value of internship experience. Highlight the skills gained and contributions made during internships, underscoring their importance in shaping your professional expertise and readiness for future roles.
