Spotlight on the K-pop Society
Thinking of joining one of our clubs or societies? Find out more about the K-pop Society at Queen’s.
Joining a club is about more than making new friends—it’s a chance to connect with like-minded people, have fun, and even enhance your CV.
At Queen’s, we’re proud to have over 200 clubs and societies, each with its own unique community and opportunities. In our Spotlight series, we’re delving into the stories behind these societies and meeting the passionate students who turn shared interests into something extraordinary. Whether you’re new to campus or simply looking to explore, this series promises inspiration, connection, and maybe even a little motivation to get involved.
This time, we’re chatting with Ven, the current president of the K-Pop Society, to discover more about their mission and why you should consider joining their society.
My name is Ven and I’m currently the President of QUB K-pop Society.
I am studying law, and I decided to join the society because I’ve always been a fan of K-pop from a young age, and I was always curious and intrigued that there was a society dedicated to K-pop.
I never knew Belfast had quite a large K-pop fandom and I always only knew one or two people who liked K-pop. I’ve been a member since 2022!
Can you tell us a bit about the origins of your society? When and why was it founded?
Our Society was founded in 2019 by a couple of students who were very interested in K-pop dance! They found there was no space for fans to come together to learn K-pop dances. Interesting fact was that we used to be K-pop Dance Society before we changed to a K-pop Society!
Check out the K Pop Society's YouTube channel to see their fantastic performance videos!
Who is the society open to? Are there any requirements to join?
Our Society is directed at K-pop fans but that's not a requirement! We are open to everyone as long as they're 18+! We have members from Queen's and Ulster, and even non students!
Why do you think a society like this is important for students at Queen’s?
Our Society is important as it provides an inclusive and safe space for K-pop fans and even the casual fans to bond and gives them a space to meet new people and make friends! K-pop is a very niche interest, so our society provides a space for dancers, fans and everyone alike.
What kind of events or activities does your society organise? Do you have any traditions?
Our Society runs a diverse number of events running from Toploader Decorating Events, Random Play Dances, Game Nights and even Club Nights.
Our tradition honestly is our yearly Performance Teams where we let dancers come together to do K-pop dances and have it professionally filmed! We also have our Competition Team where we compete abroad! In previous years we have competed in London and Nottingham.
How has being a member (or leader) in this society shaped your time at Queen’s?
Being President and previously Secretary has helped me become more confident in my skills and my organisation skills through running all these events.
It's also helped me develop new friendships and meet and become closer to who I call my best friends today. This society has given me a break from the stress of university and provides a nice space for me to unwind and relax.
What’s the best way for students interested in the society to get involved or find out more?
Our society is mainly active on Instagram through @qubkpopsoc and we are open to all DMs!
