My Experience of Queen's Student Clubs and Societies

Medicine student Manya discusses her experience with Queen's clubs and societies, from attending Christmas parties organised by the Belfast Medical Students Association, to crocheting and bracelet-making with the Art Society!

Studying medicine at Queen’s is made fun by its clubs and societies. As a new student, the fresher's fair was so exciting. I remember going on all three days and signing up to societies left right and centre! It is such a good opportunity to find out about the club’s work and join them (and pick up and some freebies). It is also a great way to meet new people and make friends.

I was initially very anxious about fitting in and finding my place in a new world but the vibrant student life and the events organised by different societies helped me make so many friends, and many more memories.

You can pick from a range of academic, sports or hobby societies. And if something you like is not on the list, you can even start your own society! Being the medicine geek I am, the first few societies that interested me were med ones

Medical societies

I remember the first event I participated in was with swotUP. I helped with their interview course to guide students interested in med school. Another one of my favourites is the Scrubs Society. They are the surgical society and organise various events throughout the year. They also have workshops and talks by healthcare professionals. These are great networking opportunities. Finishing some activities also earn you certificates that you can add to your e-portfolio.

Beyond the academic and professional benefits, being a part of these societies also enriches your social life. Whether it is a coffee morning or a party, there is always something on. BMSA organises the best medicine parties! Christmas and Halloween were standouts for me. It was such a great time to just go out and socialise with the entire year group, stress free.

Taster sessions

The Students' Union also holds taster sessions on some weekends where you can participate in the society’s work and decide if you want to join them! I participated in the Art Society, and Stitching and Bitching through these sessions. It was so much fun making bracelets with my friends and learning knitting.

Being a part of these clubs also gives me a chance to maintain a good work life balance. Moreover, it has helped me develop time management skills which are very crucial. Overall, being part of different clubs and societies has helped me grow holistically. I am so grateful for the friendships and experiences I have gained and look forward to many more in the future.

Medicine | Undergraduate Student | India

I have just finished my second year of medical school at Queen’s. It has been an enjoyable two years in Belfast with lots of study sessions in the McClay, discovering new parts of the city and working together with my peers. I am an international student from Delhi, India but the wonderful people I have met and the friends I’ve made make Belfast seem like home.
