Spotlight on: Queen's Consulting Society
As the new term approaches, so does Queen’s annual Freshers Fair. This is, of course, the perfect time to get involved in a range of university societies. Not sure which to pick? Queen’s Consulting is a great choice!
What is consulting?
Consulting can mean a lot of things however, in general, is a term loosely applied to providing business advice on various topics. This can involve defining problems or opportunities within a business, analysing data to understand these problems / opportunities, identifying a course of action, and implementing this solution.
What is the Irish Student Consulting Group?
The Irish Student Consulting Group (ISCG) is a student-driven consulting group set up in 2014. Their goal is to “re-energise indigenous businesses and non-profit organisations with fresh ideas developed from the perspective of top university students with industry experience”. They advise large commercial clients, Irish start-ups, Irish charities, international NGO’s and more.
The ISCG offers amazing opportunities for students to gain an insight into the work of a consultant. They recruit top Irish talent, offer workshops delivered by partners and sponsors, locally ran case clubs, case competitions, events and more. Their current lead sponsor is Deloitte!
It’s really a community of like-minded and driven students that can help you to grow, develop and boost your career prospects.
So then…. What is Queen’s Consulting?
The Queen’s Consulting Society is basically a branch of the ISCG. Therefore, members can take part in real life consulting projects with start-ups and larger businesses. They can work with teams to solve business related problems or even take part in the research of topics such as market entry, strategy, product development and more.
A recent event, which took place in January, was the Case Competition. This allowed members to put their consulting skills to the test and develop innovative solutions to real life business problems, alongside like-minded students for the chance to win a cash prize. This was a great opportunity for members to get an insight into consulting and find out more about what’s involved.
Through their link with the ISCG, Queen’s Consulting provide great networking and development opportunities, help students to prepare for consulting applications and allow students to get amazing real-world experience which really stands out on their CV. Best of all – no previous knowledge or experience is needed, and the society is free to join so you really have nothing to lose!
The benefits of joining a society

They’re a great way to network with fellow students and employers, give you a chance to attend university events where you can further socialise and make a great extracurricular addition to your CV; showing future employers that you had a great involvement in university life, beyond just your degree.
