What does the Learning Development Service offer?
The Learning Development Service at Queen’s provides academic skills support to undergraduate students. We do this both on-course, as part of taught degree programmes, and via individual one-to-one engagement. Academic skills that we offer guidance on include: time management, exam preparation, academic writing, referencing, academic integrity, and research. You may encounter us as part of your taught modules, where we offer Canvas-based learning resources and associated live workshops. Otherwise, you are also welcome to book a one-to-one academic skills appointment with a member of the LDS team.

What Learning Resources does the Learning Development Service provide?
We offer Canvas-based learning resources, Transition Skills for University. These resources can be accessed at go.qub.ac.uk/LDSskills
Transition Skills for University comprises six units of interactive academic skills resources and are intended to support your learning as you adjust to higher education study and transition through University. These resources can form part of your own independent study or be used for teaching purposes in a classroom setting.
In the units below, you will discover video and podcast interviews with current staff and students of Queen’s, instructional videos, and downloadable resources. In each unit, you will be asked to pause and reflect on your current learning habits and consider how you can become a more independent, healthy learner.
The six units are as follows:
- Becoming a Student at Queen's
- Developing your Study Skills
- Using the Library
- Writing at Queen’s
- Referencing
- Assessment and Feedback

What if I need support with a group project, can my group members join the appointment?
Group projects and can all members attend: We are more than happy to support you with your contribution to a group project. Please note that we cannot comment on other students' work, only yours. If you would like to have other members, come to an appointment to rehearse the presentation, if that is possible. If it is to get feedback on individual contributions, each member needs to book their own individual appointment.

Can I bring a friend to my appointment?
So that you can get the most out of your appointment, we do not encourage multiple students to come to a one-to-one appointment. If you plan to bring a friend along, please be aware that we will focus on your work only.

Where can I find a Queen’s referencing generator?
LDS is aware that there are third-party referencing generators available online, but we recommend that students always check the formatting of their references against the examples we provide in our PDF referencing guides, even when a referencing generator has been used.
LDS provide further guidance and best practice examples on referencing and plagiarism avoidance on our Canvas resources, Transition Skills for University.
