About Ambassador Hartley

Jane D. Hartley was sworn in as the United States Ambassador to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland on May 27, 2022. She served as Ambassador to the French Republic and the Principality of Monaco from 2014-2017.

She was Chief Executive Officer of Observatory Group, an international economic and political advisory firm. Before founding the Observatory Group, she was Chief Executive Officer of the G7 Group, a premier research firm providing macroeconomic and political analysis to global clients.

She was a member of the Visiting Committee of the Kennedy School at Harvard University, as well as the Executive Committee and the Dean’s Council of the Kennedy School. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Board of Overseers at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center and a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. She was also Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Sesame Workshop (Sesame Street),

Previously, Hartley was a Member of the Board of Trustees of Heidrick & Struggles and a Presidential appointee to the Board of Directors of the Corporation for National and Community Service. She was Vice Chairman of the Executive Committee of the Economics Club of New York and held positions as Vice President at both Universal (MCA) and Westinghouse Broadcasting. Hartley harbors a longstanding passion for public service and government, having served at the White House in the Carter Administration.

She earned a B.A. at Boston College (Newton College) and is married to Ralph Schlosstein. Together they have two children and a beloved Australian Shepard named “Bear.”

About Professor Karen McCloskey

Karen is Director of Queen’s Gender Initiative (QGI) and Academic Lead for Athena Swan. She chairs the institutional SAT and has been an advocate for gender equality in academia since 2012. She has co-led departmental (silver and gold) and institutional (silver) Athena Swan applications and has served as a panellist.

In her experience, Athena Swan enables change, improving the participation of women in universities, particularly in senior academic and leadership roles.

As Director of QGI, a female-focused entity that leads gender equality in Queen’s, she works with a dedicated team to advance women’s visibility, support leadership development, provide bespoke mentoring and foster an enabling culture. She is passionate about engendering an environment where everyone has a sense of belonging with their individual and collective contributions recognized. She is currently co-chairing the ‘Future Workforce – Future Workplace’ workstream of the University’s Strategic Plan 2030.

As a Professor of Physiology, Karen has educational and research academic roles and has served on a range of boards and committees. She enjoys carrying out experiments in the laboratory, when her (excellent) research group give permission and time allows. Her group works on bladder dysfunction and urological cancers, with the aim of combatting cancer while minimizing treatment side-effects on the bladder.
