University of Manchester Vice-Chancellor Receives Honorary Degree from Queen’s

The President and Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester will today (14 December) receive an honorary degree from Queen’s University Belfast.

Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell has been Vice-Chancellor of The University of Manchester since 2010, the first female to be appointed to this prestigious role, and also holds a Chair in Physiology at the University.

She is internationally renowned for her ongoing research in neuroscience which has contributed towards major advances in the understanding and treatment of brain damage in stroke and head injury.

In 2004, Dame Nancy became a Fellow of the Royal Society, and was made Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire for her services to science in the Queen’s birthday honours in 2005. She was the founding President of the Royal Society of Biology, and has served as a non-executive director of AstraZeneca.

Speaking ahead of receiving her honorary degree for her services to science and medicine, Dame Nancy said: “I have always had great respect for Queen’s University Belfast and I am impressed by the scientific research that takes place here.

“It is a great honour to be recognised in this manner by the University. I feel privileged to be graduating alongside these students today and congratulate them all on their achievements.”

She is currently co-chair of the Prime Minister’s Council for Science and Technology, a Deputy Lieutenant for Greater Manchester, Chair of Corridor Manchester Board, a member of the Greater Manchester Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Board and a member of the Northern Powerhouse Partnership Board.
