Queen’s hosts launch of book by noted Harvard historian
On Friday, 10 March, Queen’s University hosted the launch of a seminal new study of civil wars by the distinguished Harvard historian, Professor David Armitage, 'Civil Wars: A History in Ideas'.
Prior to the launch, Professor Armitage delivered a keynote lecture to a conference on ‘Commemorating Partition and Civil Wars in Ireland’. The conference was part of an AHRC-funded project run by Dr Marie Coleman and Dr Dominic Bryan that examines approaches to the upcoming centenary of the partition of Ireland, and is one of a number of funded research projects being undertaken in the University linked to the commemoration of the Irish ‘decade of centenaries’.
Introducing the lecture, Professor Richard English, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Internationalisation and Engagement, welcomed Professor Armitage back to Queen’s to launch the book that has emerged from his Wiles Lectures delivered at Queen’s in May 2010.
Launching the book, which examines civil wars from antiquity to the post-9/11 concept of global civil wars, Professor Yvonne Galligan, Head of the School of History, Anthropology, Philosophy and Politics, paid tribute to Boyd family, the benefactors of the Wiles Trust, whose support has enabled Queen’s to host internationally-renowned historians for a week of lectures annually since 1953.
