Belmont University Summer Programme 2024 - Anastacia Elliott
Participating in the Belmont University Summer Programme in Nashville, Tennessee, was a transformative experience that fostered significant personal, academic, and professional growth.
One of the most inspiring aspects of the programme was learning about the civil rights movement in Nashville. Visiting historical sites, for example, the Belmont Mansion and hearing first-hand accounts from local activists brought history to life in a way that textbooks never could. The resilience and courage displayed by individuals during that era were truly inspiring. Additionally, hearing the gospel music at the Ephesian Primitive Baptist Church, and learning how it served as a powerful source of motivation for African Americans during their hardships, deeply moved and inspired me.
Before the trip, my understanding of Nashville was limited to its reputation as the heart of country music. While country music holds significant cultural and economic importance, there is much more to the city. The programme challenged this narrow view by exposing me to the city's rich and complex history, particularly its pivotal role in the civil rights movement. Learning about the struggles and triumphs of African American communities in Nashville made me reconsider my assumptions about the city's cultural and social dynamics. Furthermore, the discussions on city planning and infrastructure revealed the deep-rooted inequalities that still exist, challenging my preconceptions about the effectiveness of urban development in addressing social issues.
The programme significantly developed my knowledge and skills in several areas. Learning to analyse data to identify injustices within Nashville provided me with practical skills in data analysis and interpretation. This experience not only enhanced my technical abilities but also taught me the importance of using data to inform social justice initiatives. The programme also reinforced the value of interdisciplinary approaches to problem-solving, as we combined insights from history, urban planning, and data science to understand and address complex issues. Additionally, the experience fostered a deeper appreciation for cultural diversity and the importance of community engagement in creating equitable and inclusive cities.
The Belmont University Summer Programme has added significant value to my degree and future career opportunities. The knowledge and skills gained in data analysis, urban planning, and social justice are directly applicable to my philosophical studies and future career in public policy. The experience of working on real-world problems with students and professionals from diverse backgrounds has enhanced my ability to collaborate and communicate effectively in diverse settings. Furthermore, the insights gained from the civil rights movement in Nashville have deepened my understanding of social justice issues, making me more empathetic and informed to advocate for change. Additionally, the “What’s Your Why?” classes significantly facilitated my personal growth and helped me gain a clearer direction for my future. These classes encouraged deep self-reflection, enabling me to better understand my motivations, strengths, and goals. This newfound clarity has been instrumental in shaping my path forward and empowering me to pursue my ambitions with greater confidence and purpose.
Ultimately, the programme was an inspiring and challenging experience that has profoundly impacted my personal and professional development. It expanded my understanding of the city's history and culture, developed my analytical and problem-solving skills, and reinforced the importance of social justice and community engagement. The programme has undoubtedly added value to my degree and career prospects, equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to contribute meaningfully to society.
