The University has close ties with the USA through 16 strategic North American partnerships and over 4000 alumni and is keen to further develop these partnerships as part of its global ambitions.   

Leading the delegation were Californian State Assemblymember and Queen’s Mitchell Scholar Matt Haney, and Queen’s graduate Micheál Smith, Irish Consul General of the West Coast of the US. 

A panel comprised of Queen’s researchers discussed key mutual challenges such as cybersecurity and AI, biotech and clean energy. 

Speaking about the visit, Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Ian Greer said:

Our commitment to strengthening and cultivating relationships with friends in the United States is unwavering.  

As we approach our 180th anniversary, Queen’s is reaffirming our commitment to our role as a stable driver of innovation, peace, and prosperity. A core part of this work is fostering lasting relationships with those who share our vision for the future. Our commitment to innovation, peace, prosperity, global connections, and focus on equal opportunities for all students are just a few of the unique qualities that set us apart.” 

 Assemblymember and Queen's Mitchell Scholar, Matt Haney said:  

“I'm very proud to come back here as Co-Chair of the California Legislative Irish Caucus, bringing over ten legislators from California - a huge delegation of industry and policy leaders who are interested in strengthening ties with Ireland and Northern Ireland economically, politically and culturally. It's exciting to come back not as a student, but as now an elected official who continues to be committed to the relationship between Northern Ireland, Ireland and the US.” 

Queen’s graduate Micheál Smith, the Irish Consul General of the West Coast of the US added:  

“Queen's is an iconic university and it's not just the beauty of the building and the surroundings. Queen’s is contributing to the economic landscape of Northern Ireland today - it's tremendous to see that and the talent that has been produced from this university. This is why the delegation are here today.”
