Overview

This doctoral project explores individual differences in personality and Depersonalisation-Derealisation Disorder (DPDR), a mental health condition characterised by a sense of detachment from one’s own thoughts and emotions, leading to significant life impairment and comorbid symptoms.

This PhD project will examine individual differences in personality as they relate to DPDR, building on recent research findings (https://doi.org/10.1111/jopy.12976). DPDR manifests through a persistent sense of disconnection from oneself while retaining an intact perception of reality, resulting in extensive life challenges for affected individuals. The project will primarily explore how stable individual traits contrast with fluctuating momentary experiences of DPDR symptoms, using methodologies such as Ecological Momentary Assessments. In addition, the project offers potential scope to explore and possibly differentiate between DPDR associated with stable perceptual dysregulation and experiential permeability and trauma-related forms of DPDR. Methodologies will encompass intensive longitudinal methods alongside advanced quantitative analysis techniques. A genuine interest in the topic and the relevant methods are essential.
