Privy Council Notes:
- There were two versions of this bill (whose proceedings throughout display great complexity). The first was this one, initiated by the IPC and transmitted before the parliamentary session began. The second began as heads in the HC, and was transmitted on 17 Dec. 1703 - see 'To prevent the further growth of popery (commons)'. The EPC took both into consideration before approving an amended version on 20 Jan. 1704. The two bills had identical titles (at least from the time of their transmission by the IPC), so that it impossible to say whether the final bill approved by the EPC was based principally on one version rather than the other. It has been assumed here that the final approved version was based on the IPC’s bill.

The following printed item refers a petition to the English Privy Council relating to this bill: The case of George Mathew Junr. of Thurless in the County of Tipperary, in the kingdom of Ireland, Esq; and of Martha his wife, in relation to a Bill lately transmitted from Ireland for Her Majesty's approbation in Council, intitled, An Act to prevent the growth of popery. [ESTCT136842] Transcript on file. The only reported copy is in B.L., bound with another item relating to a bill before the English Privy Council; the two items, though referring to separate bills, are largely identical. See no. 2687.
