Privy Council Notes:
- 'committee … observe that in the enumeration of the duties payable by the first schedule of the said bill upon the importation of the several sorts and descriptions of sugar (which duties ought to be made equal to the duties imposed by the several English acts of parliament now in force) in the article of refined sugars, the duty imposed upon that species by 21 George III, cap. 16 of 4s 8d for every cwt of sugar containing 112 lb, is omitted to be aded to all the former duties (the duty upon such refined sugar in England amounting to £4 18 7 12/20, and the duty imposed by the present bill being only £4 13 4 3 1/3) notwithstanding the said duty of 4s 8d is properly added, in all the other articles. Their lordships have therefore thought it necessary that the lord lieutenant and privy council of Ireland should be apprised of this omission, and acquainted that as there is not sufficient time at present to have the mistake corrected, and as they understand that the high duties upon this article of sugar, exclusive of the said additional duty, do in fact amount to a prohibition of the same, and that in fact none of that description has ever been imported since the said high duties were laid. And as this act is only an annual act, they have thought fit upon such considerations to recommend it to his majesty to return the bill, but their lordships hope, that it will be recommended to the parliament of Ireland to pass a short bill during this session of parliament to rectify the said mistake.
And their lordships do liekwise wish, that the bills which may be transmitted from Ireland in future should be sent over such a convenient time before the commencement of such bills as will be proper for the due consideration of the same. Ordered [that letter be sent to] lord lieutenant of Ireland conformable to the above minute …' (PC 2/130, p. 96, 17 Mar. 1785).
