- HL, 27 Oct.: ‘The lord archbishop of Dublin … reports … from the committee appointed for religion that they are of opinion, that popish holidays should be abrogated; and that they have also considered of ease to dissenters, and the security of the church established by law [5078]; as also the restraint of vice and profaneness on the Lord’s Day, and reformation of manners, both in the clergy and laity [5181]; and pray the leave of this house, to bring in heads for bills to be passed for these ends.
Resolved, on the question, that popish holidays be abrogated.
Resolved, on the question, that the committee for religion have leave to prepare heads, pursuant to their report.’
The committee for religion recommended 3 heads of bills; it is possible that the last resolution quoted referred only to the first heads recommended. It has been assumed however that it referred to all 3 heads, and therefore 5078 and 5181 have also been treated as heads which were ordered.
Cf. sole mention of this measure in the Lords' Journal on 27 Oct. with three references in the diary of Archbishop Marsh on 12, 27 Oct. and 1 Nov. Raymond Gillespie (ed.), Scholar bishop: the recollections of Narcissus Marsh, 1638–1696 (Cork, 2003), pp 43, 46, 48.
