Haris Amir and Shannon McLaughlin Honored with Inaugural Declan McGeown Outreach Award
Belfast, October 26, 2023 — Haris and Shannon have been awarded the inaugural "Declan McGeown Outreach Award" for their exceptional contribution to bridging project-based learning with the A-Level Chemistry curriculum in Northern Ireland.
The award, named in honour of the late Declan McGeown, recognises outstanding efforts in educational outreach and the enhancement of student engagement through innovative teaching methods. Haris and Shannon's work has set a new standard for integrating real-world applications with academic learning, significantly enriching the educational experience for A-Level Chemistry students.
Their pioneering project-based learning initiatives, involving ionic liquid application for the synthesis of fragrances, have not only made complex chemical concepts more accessible and engaging but have also fostered critical thinking and problem-solving skills among students. By collaborating with research institutions, Haris and Shannon have provided students with hands-on experience and insights into the practical applications of their studies, preparing them for future academic pursuits and re-enforcing their interest in Chemistry.
The award was presented during a special ceremony, full of emotion, dedicated to Declan at the Riddle Hall, where colleagues, students, Royal Society of Chemistry representative, and Members of Declan's Family gathered to celebrate their achievements.
