Spotlight: Our students giving back to the community
At The School of Law, we are very fortunate to have a cohort of students who give back to the community with their time and energies alongside their studies. Today, we want to focus on our Postgraduate Taught student Jennifer Millar's great work in the housing sector.
Outside her studies, Jenni advocates for tenants within the Private Rental Sector through Renter's Voice, a project supported by Housing Rights. As part of Housing Rights' 60th Anniversary Celebrations, Jenni was privileged to be asked to give a short speech to an audience of housing professionals, which included the UN Special Rapporteur on The Right to Adequate Housing.
When asked to reflect upon what that meant to her, Jenni describes this as an "incredible opportunity to speak with the Special Rapporteur and seek his views on housing in Northern Ireland and Worldwide and to prompt some potential quotes for my master's dissertation which focuses on the Private Rental Sector. The SR gave an enlightening talk on homelessness worldwide and provided some very sobering statistics mirrored throughout both developed and third world countries."
What is particularly impressive is that Jennifer balances her advocacy alongside her studies and raising a family. Jennifer touched on these challenges herself, saying she was happy to address such an illustrious audience, which included the SR and MLAs, senior housing professionals, and peers. However, she'd rather have "preferred it not to have occurred straight after a very long night shift at her "day" job as a specialist homeless support worker”.
Jennifer, it goes without saying that we are all proud of your dedication and commitment. Thank you for reflecting our school in such a positive light among the community.
