Bulletin of Spanish Studies celebrates 100 years
The internationally renowned Queen’s-based academic journal celebrated its centenary year with a symposium and dinner at the University on 14-15 September 2023.
The Bulletin, which is dedicated to research into the languages, literatures, histories and civilisations of Spain, Portugal and Latin America, invited scholars from across the globe to deliver papers at the Symposium.
A diverse programme was covered, which ranged from Feminism and film in the works of Camilo José Cela to Luis Buñuel, friendship in Don Quijote, a video essay on The Wild Bunch and La Caza, Antonio Machado, Early Modern Spanish poetry to an examination of British-Spanish connections in the 20th Century. Speakers included Professor Isabel Torres (Queen’s University Belfast, and Editor-in-chief at the journal); Professor Jo Evans (University College London and Editor-in-chief); Professor Catherine Davies (emerita, School of Advanced Study, University of London); Professor Rob Stone (University of Birmingham); Professor Xon de Ros (University of Oxford); Dr Marina Pérez de Arcos (University of Oxford) and Professor Marsha Collins (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill). A wine reception (sponsored by the School of Arts, English and Languages) was held in the Naughton Gallery, and dinner was served in the Great Hall. Invited guests included Mr José Lázaro, Honorary Vice Consul of Spain in Belfast; Professor Catherine Boyle, President of the Association of Hispanists of Great Britain and Ireland; as well as well as representatives from Routledge, Taylor and Francis Publishing Group. The University was represented by Professor Nola Hewitt-Dundas, Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences; Professor Janice Carruthers, Dean of Research; Dr Kurt Taroff, Head of School; and Professor Maeve McCusker, Director of Research.
