Michael Longley CBE (1939 - 2025)
It is with deep sadness that we have learned of the death of Michael Longley. A makar of the highest order, whose exquisite poems of love and war span seven decades, Michael’s contribution to literature is truly exceptional.
The richness and reach of his work extends from his home city of Belfast throughout these islands and across the globe. Michael’s presence and poems are cherished by the staff and students of English at Queen’s where Michael, with characteristic good grace and humour, generously gave his time to discuss poems with our students. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife of sixty years, Edna Longley, Professor Emerita and esteemed poetry critic who taught literature at Queen’s from the 1960s, and to their children, Rebecca, Daniel and Sarah, and grandchildren.
