Themes of history, memory and activism through art are to the fore in this episode, as filmmaker and scholar Victoria Baltag illustrates how the moving image can be a powerful medium of connection between the present and the hidden past.

The destruction of cultural heritage is a war crime under the Geneva Convention because we recognise that losing access to culture is hugely damaging to our psyche as humans. Recovering or rebuilding these cultural artefacts might be seen, in some ways, as a kind of protest against efforts to break us as people, efforts to destroy the very things that constitute our humanity.
