Alumni Profile: Ruth Kirkpatrick
Clinical Psychologist
My placement at the Upper Springfield Development Trust (USDT) was an invaluable experience and remains one of the highlights of my undergraduate Psychology degree. I was offered a range of excellent opportunities within this setting, including a central role in designing, implementing and evaluating a staff satisfaction project. I worked closely with the Assistant Director, who was also my Placement Mentor, and she offered me endless support throughout my time with the organisation.
Reflecting ten years following my experience, this placement developed my self-awareness and confidence – particularly as I laid the foundations for transferring my psychological knowledge to the workplace. The USDT offered me opportunities to use my initiative and creativity, whilst also encouraging me to work as part of a diverse team. These are abilities which I continue to utilise today, in my current employment.
Following my undergraduate degree, I returned to Queen’s to complete a Masters degree in Atypical Child Development. During and following this, I sought to build experience in a variety of job roles within the education and charity sectors, and took up a temporary Research Assistant post at the School. Drawing on both my academic and employment experience, I then became an Assistant Psychologist in the Northern Health and Social Care Trust. I progressed to Associate Psychologist within this team and was fortunate to complete the Diploma in Applied Psychology (Clinical Specialism) at Queen’s, in addition to my job role.
I progressed to completing the Doctorate in Clinical Psychology and recently finished my studies. I am currently enjoying my role as a Clinical Psychologist in a Paediatric Healthcare setting. As I reflect on my studies, I truly believe that taking part in the modular placements provided me with key skills which have been essential components in my career journey. It was such a worthwhile experience and I would definitely recommend it!
