ABSTRACT

Bach's Credo in England: an early history

Yo Tomita

The Bach reception in England took its root in various forms and strength, depending on the genre, styles and the context in which his pieces were performed and studied. While criticising the style of his fugues, Charles Burney praised unreservedly Bach's Credo in his General History of Music in 1789.

This paper examines its context and background, while incorporating the information from several new sources that were not known to Friedrich Smend, the editor of the Neue Bach Ausgabe.
