My Trip to Malin Head and Donegal
As part of Colombian student Isa's travels around Ireland, she took a road trip to Malin Head, the most northerly point of the island. Read about her visit to this beautiful part of Ireland below.

Don’t take Ireland for granted. You’ve probably just recently arrived on the island, and you’re probably thinking that one year will be enough to do and visit everything you have planned in this wonderful place. I really hope you can do it! The only advice I can give you is to do it as soon as possible and not postpone anything! Give as much priority to walking and exploring the island as to your academic commitments, because that’s what your experience here is all about! Touring, learning, and getting to know.
One of the must-see places you should go to during your time living in Belfast is Donegal! Located on the western side of the island of Ireland, Donegal is a paradise for nature lovers. Its wild landscapes, golden sandy beaches, and majestic cliffs offer a perfect escape to feel like you’re in a fairy tale and distract yourself from everyday obligations.
I call this picture “Vacile colectrico”. Vacile in spanish means like joyful and colectrico comes from “coleto” which is a urban style in my hometown and “eléctrico” which means electric
In Donegal, Malin Head is located at the most northerly point of Ireland, it is a stunning destination known for its dramatic landscapes and fascinating history. Overlooking the Wild Atlantic, this spot is perfect for unforgettable walks. Malin Head has also been the setting for films such as Star Wars, adding a touch of cinematic magic to its natural charm.
From Belfast to Malin Head
I travelled by car as Malin Head was part of the itinerary of a road trip I had with my friends. However, to get here from Belfast, the options seem to be limited, so if you are going in a group I would recommend renting a car. The options for public transport are summarised as follows: bus from Belfast to Derry/Londonderry; bus from Derry to Carndonagh; or taxi from Carndonagh to Malin Head. The one-way trip could take around 3 hours with a total cost of 38 pounds per person.
I can't believe I was here
Once you get to Malin Head: the most northerly point in Ireland
The activity I did at Malin Head was mainly hiking and appreciating the coastal paths, which offer spectacular views of the Atlantic and the cliffs. This point of the island offers a series of trails that stand out for their wild landscapes, views of the Atlantic and an environment that combines history, fauna and natural beauty. While walking around this place, I was able to enjoy a mix of routes that allowed me to immerse myself in feeling like part of the ecosystem.
One of the most popular trails is Banba’s Crown, which is relatively easy and offers stunning views from the get-go. Coincidentally, the day I went to Donegal was quite sunny and we were able to enjoy seeing Scottish islands while also being able to enjoy the Donegal landscapes. The area is also famous for its rock formations and historic WWII lookout posts, which adds a layer of historical interest to the hike.
Being cautious
My favourite spot during the entire hike was Hell’s Hole, a huge crack in the rocky coast where I could walk close to the cliff and appreciate the power of the sea. This trail is a bit shorter, but it is still fascinating for the natural spectacle it offers. The sound of the waves hitting the rocks and the view of the ocean make this a perfect place to stop and enjoy the power of nature.
Make time in your schedule and give yourself a well-deserved break by visiting the entire island of Ireland. Malin Head is a perfect way to explore the nature and history of this beautiful island. The landscapes, wildlife and peaceful surroundings make it an ideal destination for those looking for an authentic experience on Ireland's wild coast.
