Fireside Chat with Cecilia Harvey
EEECS were lucky to host a special guest this week, Cecilia Harvey, a celebrated Women in Tech advocate, co-founder of Tech Women Today and COO of City and Guilds, whilst she visited Queen’s for the Global Innovation Summit.
We held a fireside chat, wonderfully hosted by Moira Watson, Senior Lecturer and former Swan champion in the school. Students were invited to hear about Cecilia's journey and her experiences working across tech companies and leading in tech.
During this chat, Cecilia gave amazing, practical advice to our students and staff, encouraging innovation and community, shifting the definition of networking, and encouraging us to hold unapologetic boundaries to allow you to innovate with purpose.
One of the takeaways for us was to be a connector. Having a supportive community around you is key to being able to do great things in tech. In our school and more widely across the university, there are ongoing events and activities, societies and committees, which aim to support staff and students and build community. If you are reading this and have an idea, suggestion or interest in a particular topic, please get involved in the school activities, your community, or other initiatives across the university. As Cecilia Harvey said, "What do you have to lose?".
The EEECS Swan SAT team would like to say a big thank you to Moira Watson, the EEECS HoS team and the Comms team at QUB for arranging and hosting this special event and to everyone who came along! On behalf of the school, we would also like to show our appreciation to Cecilia Harvey to thank her for making the time to visit our school and for sharing her wonderful words of wisdom!
