EEECS 2025 International Women’s Day Event - Smart Tech: To use or Abuse?
On Friday 7 March, we celebrated International Women's Day 2025 by highlighting an EEECS PhD Researcher working on the misuse of smart tech.

Adrianne Thompson gave an enlightening and frightening talk on the double-edged sword of smart devices, and how tech can be misused, especially in domestic abuse cases.
We heard via numerous examples that technology is gendered, so we all need to consider innovation from a variety of perspectives and consider the dual purpose of any innovative tool. We also heard that policy and regulatory frameworks cannot keep up with fast-paced technological developments.
So what can we do?
Adrianne suggested several takeaways to all attendees, from better understanding your digital footprint, to advocating for tech security policies, supporting research and awareness in this domain and amplifying the voices of women in tech.
