Jean Leonard receives the 2023 McGuinness Award
On Tuesday 19 September, the McGuinness Award was presented to Jean Leonard in the Whitla Hall. Named in memory of our student, Conall McGuinness, the Award seeks to recognise a Level 1 student who has gone above and beyond to support their fellow peers as they adjust to life at university.
Dr Paul Wilson, reflecting on the day, emphasized the importance of a tightly-knit School community:
“We came together with the McGuinness family to remember Conall, a Level 1 student who sadly died in February 2022. We reflected on the importance of having a strong and closely connected School community where all members of the School look out for one another and support each other, promoting positive mental health.”
Conall’s family developed the criteria for the award, using attributes that they felt reflected Conall, which were:
- Commitment, dedication, and curiosity to the subject matter
- Respecting others from diverse backgrounds and encouraging participation
- Sharing an openness, kindness, empathy and understanding to others
- Having a positive, friendly attitude, encouraging others with a warm and supportive presence
- Listening to and valuing the contributions of others
- An Icebreaker
- A genuine person who impacts others simply by a nod of the head, a wave of the hand, a name remembered, and a smile freely given
- A friend
The McGuinness Award is student-led, based on nominations from Level 1 students. Students are asked to nominate a peer who embodies these attributes and contributes to the School community. This year there were numerous commendable nominations with the final decision being made by a vote among Level 1 students. This saw Jean Leonard recognised as the recipient of the 2023 McGuinness Award for her outstanding support for her peers during 2022-23.
The McGuinness family said:
"We were overwhelmed when Queen's initially suggested an Award to honour Conall and delighted to present it to Jean, who clearly demonstrates all that the Award represents. The criteria for the Award was actually taken from words used to describe Conall by students and staff at QUB so is especially meaningful. It has been a privilege to work so closely with the Psychology Dept. and we look forward to that continuing. Congratulations to all the nominees and to Jean on winning the Award. "
Jean Leonard expressed her gratitude:
“Proud beyond measure to be chosen by my wonderful peers in the School of Psychology and to be able to take part in what I can only describe as a significant and memorable award ceremony in tribute to Conall McGuinness. Sincere thanks to the McGuinness family and QUB Psychology staff for the kindness, guidance and support they have shown me throughout the last year and during this award presentation.”
Members of Conall's family including his parents and two of his sisters, presented the award to Jean. Conall’s father, Gerry, then briefly addressed Jean and her classmates, encouraging the class to talk to and support each other. Later the family met with Jean and some of the other nominees over lunch.
We thank the McGuinness family for their visit and their close involvement in this award.
