Find a PhD Supervisor

Before starting your application, we recommend contacting a potential supervisor.

A PhD supervisor can be someone you interacted with at Queen’s during postgraduate or undergraduate study, or someone who you may not know but can see their interests align with your own.

Your supervisor will be someone who you regularly work with and interact with throughout your time at Queen’s, so it’s important that you feel you both are a good match.

On each listing, you will find whether that supervisor is open to applications, what they’re interested in and links to their research profile where you can find out more about their active and/or past research projects.

The best way to contact a potential supervisor is by email. Academics are often very busy so be sure that your email is tailored, clear and concise. Be sure to:

  • Create a subject line summarising your intent
  • Give an overview of your professional and/or academic background
  • Include an outline of your research interest and how you feel it aligns with their expertise
  • Explain why you want to do this research
  • Whether you want to study full or part-time
  • State your funding plans
